Food: An Oxford Anthology
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (December, 1995)
Author: Brigid Allen
Average review score:

Absolutely essential for anyone who has ever eaten
Back before his disgrace, people took Jeff Smith (the Frugal Gourmet) very seriously about a lot of things. I still do, since I'm of the opinion his sexual habits, however reprehensible, have not a bloody thing to do with his skill in the kitchen. Anyhow, the point is, Mr Smith said that he had never seen anyone more obsessed with food than the Chinese; he said that they speak of the next meal while eating the current one. I have a similar habit in that I love to read about food and cooking while eating. If you share this habit, by all means beg, borrow, or steal a copy of this book. It is THE great Western cultural survey of food and eating.

Fortas: The Rise and Ruin of a Supreme Court Justice
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (July, 1988)
Author: Bruce Allen Murphy
Average review score:

Politics and Law Crash head first, and end in disaster
Fortas was the ultimate insider, from Roosevelt on. He founded one of Washington's most prestigeous law firms, and became the lawyer for a vast array of clients, ranging from Peurto Rico to many large corporations who wanted something from Uncle Sam.

But his career will forever be defined by his relationship with Lyndon Johnson. More than Johnson's personal lawyer (which he was), he was also Johnson's political confidant.

Not surprisingly, when Johnson had a chance to fill a Supreme Court seat, he gave it to Fortas. Fortas did not want it, and Murphy's description of Johnson's ploy to force Fortas to accept Johnson's "gift" is one of the most telling stories I have ever read about Johnosn.

The problem was, once on the Court, Johnson still treated Fortas as both his personal lawyer and his political advisor. Fortas' relationship with Johnson may have gone un noticed, but Johnson decided to do Fortas a second (unwanted) favor, by appointing him as Chief Justice when Warren retired.

The tragedy of the Senate confirmation hearings form the center of this remarkable book. As a study in the raw workings of politics (presidential, congressional, and on the court itself), it is unsurpassed. Fortas' life was destroyed, and the Court was handed over to Burger, Nixon, and the conservatives. How would the law be different today if only Fortas had been confirmed?

If you can find a copy, snap it up. Such a superb book has no reason to ever be "out of print."

The Franklin's Prologue and Tale
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (January, 2000)
Authors: Geoffrey Chaucer, Valerie Allen, and David Kirkham
Average review score:

Marriage, adultery and promises - Chaucer was ahead of his t
Who is the narrator? By the end of the tale i was confused if Chaucer, The Franklin or one of his characters was speaking to me! Chaucer, the author of Canterbury Tales introdues the Franlin who now has to tell his tale to the rest of a pilgrimage on their way to Canterbury. The franklin who is just below the nobility in rank spells out an exquisite teale in which Arveragus marries Dorigen and promises never to be her master or force her to do anything unwillfully. Arveragus soon departs the scene as he goes to fight abroad and along comes Aurelius who declares his true love for Dorigen. Dorigen is upset and is in two minds what to do so she casts Aureilus away by setting him an impossible task of removing all the rocks in the sea to win her love. Aurelius nearly dies but with help from his brother and a magician an illusion is created whereby all the rocks disappear. Dorigen is now in trouble as Arveragus returns and she cannot possibly confess to love both men at the same time. She tells Arveragus of the situation who forces her to live with Aurelius. Dorigen thinks about committing suicide but then decides to approach Aurelius who forgives her and tells her to live with her husband. Aurelius now has no money to pay the magician for his illusion but all ends well as the magician lets him off. Who is the most kindes of them all? It is difficult to suggest who but this tale is so enthralling that you have to read it to believe it!

Freedom's Child: The Story of My Mother, a Confederate General's Black Daughter
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (June, 1999)
Author: Carrie Allen McCray
Average review score:

A MAGNIFICENT LOOK AT AMERICA'S HISTORY!!!
This is an amazing true story of one woman's searh for her past. Not only does she find it, but her pot of gold at the end of the rainbow was, at first, a mixed blessing. Carrie Allen McCray was forced to face her own prejudices when she discovered that her grandfather was not only a white man but he was a Confederate General in the Civil War. But he also played a major role in the life of his Black daughter. That daughter became a powerful civil rights leader and she was Carrie's mother. FREEDOM'S CHILD is wonderfully written and absorbing from the first page. I HIGHLY recommend it. It is not just the story of a Black family's history, it really is a story of America's history and how we are all truly linked.. like it or not. IT WOULD MAKE A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!!!
